The BA runs CREST Investigators and Crest Awards.  The BA Crest Investigators is a scheme that enables primary children to solve scientific problems through practical investigation.  The activities focus on thinking about, talking about and doing science.  They are designed primarily to be used outside class time, eg in a science club.  There are excellent resource packs for different age groups (5-7, 7-11 and 8-12 year olds) which could be used at a weekly club for 8-12 weeks.  Packs are very reasonable priced - £30-£40 per kit.  Click here for further information

The BA Crest Awards are for young people aged 11-19.  Through BA Crest, young people explore the real nature of science and technology by doing their own creative problem solving through mini research projects.

Imagineering Junior Engineering Clubs
Imagineering Clubs

Imagineering Junior Engineering Clubs are aimed at encouraging children of Primary School age to become the next generation of Engineers and Scientists. In these Clubs children are helped to make working models from a series of kits. As well as practical skills, through their natural curiosity they gain an understanding of how their models work, and of engineering and science in general. And when they take their completed models home, parental interest further encourages their enthusiasm.

Purchasing an Imagineering Kit is a good way to get a primary club up and running.

Institution of Civil Engineers Bridges to Schools Initiative
ICE

This is an ongoing scheme promoted by the Institution of Civil Engineers with a view to raise the awareness of the Civil Engineering Profession among Primary School pupils. Pupils participate in the construction of an 8m span bridge using a kit supplied by the organisers.

It is intended to give the pupils an early insight into the challenges of Civil Engineering while having some fun along the way.
A brand new kit is now available!

Institution of Civil Engineers Rapid Response Engineering Challenge
Rapid Response

The Rapid Response Engineering Challenge (RREC) demonstrates a new method of communicating engineering principles to S1 school children, based on re-building a devastated country hit by a hurricane.

All pupils are introduced to a scenario where they have to imagine they are engineers going to help people who have very little infrastructure left after the storm.

The RREC started life in 2004 at Carnoustie High School where teachers with assistance from Construction Skills and ICE held the first Challenge.   The success of this initiative is being gradually adopted by other schools in Scotland.

The RREC is in four stages:

  • A Motivational Talk, given by a civil engineer, convinces the pupils that they are needed as Disaster Relief Engineers to assist in a disaster area
  • Over one or two weeks, the pupils then prepare their skills through their normal lessons
  • Following training, the pupils demonstrate the skills they have learnt at an Activities Day assisted by volunteer Civil Engineers.
  • On-going fund-raising for needy children in the world

By operating across the whole curriculum the Rapid Response Engineering Challenge engages young people in the highest quality learning activities while focusing on outcomes to maximise success for all learners. Many of the other dimensions of excellence are developed and promote the highest standards of learning and teaching by linking the classroom work with practical solutions.   Teachers find this activity runs across the whole spectrum of education and enables the pupils to see a practical usefulness to their lessons.

To register you interest in Bridges to Schools or Rapid Response Engineering Challenge, contact John McPartlin, Education and Careers Coordinator, ICE Scotland, 105 West George Street, Glasgow G2 1QL, john.mcpartlin@ice.org.uk, tel: 0141 578 9986.
