Lochaber High Take on the Royal Navy Challenge in Portsmouth

Lochaber High had two teams at the finals of the Royal Navy Challenge in Portsmouth - and both teams came away with prizes.  In total they won £450.00.  During their three days in Portsmouth (staying on the decommissioned destroyer H.M.S. Bristol) the students were well looked after by all the squad at H.M.S. Sultan Navy Base.

One of the highlights - apart from winning awards - was a trip up in a Royal Navy helicopter along the Portsmouth coast... with one of two tricks performed by the pilot in the air.

An International First for Young Engineers Clubs Scotland

The Young Engineers Club at East Cobb Middle School, Georgia, USA was formed as a result of a collaborative program with Lochgelly High School, Young Engineers Club, Fife involving both schools tackling the “F1 in Schools Challenge”. The schools presented their “F1 in Schools” entry in the “Collaborative Project” category of the F1 World Championships in Melbourne, Australia in March 2007, and were winners of the Webex trophy for the best Collaborative Project.

East Cobb Middle School Young Engineers Club introduces students to the world of engineering. Students follow a path of independent study that allows them to experiment with electronics, programming, mechanical themes, and all other aspects of the field of engineering.

Present activities have been dedicated to working with robots and understanding basic commands, theories, and actions that the robots, or in this case, Boe-Bots, could perform. The program focused on breadboard circuitry and programming. Through circuitry, students learn about electricity and were introduced to simple designs. The programming aspect of the Engineering Club allowed students to learn about computer language and caused them to apply logic in order to write programs. The mechanical aspect of the class, however, is equally an important opportunity for the students to learn why and how the robot responded as it did, as well as how to apply that in various fields.

If they had questions or wished to delve even deeper into a subject, Mr. Stillwell (the Club Leader) would explain the content more fully, eliminating any confusion the students might have.

At the end of the term, the students were asked to program their Boe-Bot to perform a task of their choosing in the period of one minute. This encourages students to use all of their skills of logic and creativity in a fun, broad way, and therefore increases their understanding and application in all areas of engineering, and prepares them for careers, classes, or even hobbies, in programming, electricity, and more.

In the Club session 2007/2008, East Cobb Middle School will tackle the Rampaging Chariots Challenge (sponsored by Selex). This is an excellent example of an International link between Scotland and the USA. It is hoped that the link will be promoted through other schools in the USA, firstly in the State of Georgia, and ultimately through the Technology Students Association (TSA) which is USA wide.

Lochgelly High School Champions at the F1 Technology Challenge in Australia

Lochgelly High School Young Engineers have done it again! Representing Scotland in the International Finals of the F1 Technology Challenge, three 12 year old students partnered with three pupils from Georgia in the USA to fight for the first ever Collaboration Championship in Melbourne, Australia.

"The team of six called 'Team Hybrid' rocked the competition with the range of skills they brought to the challenge. It was the first time in the 9 year history of the programme that 'Collaboration Teams' could compete. Team Hybrid from Scotland and the USA have become the very first Webex World Champions!

Lochgelly HS & their Georgia partners were presented with a trophy as the "Webex World Champions" in the "Collaboration Teams" category.

"The team had a fantastic time and owe it all to their sponsors who fully backed the team. The SCDI who donated £1000 to the students made a big difference to the team; just like real Formula One, the successful F1-in-Schools teams need the finance to compete."

"Lochgelly High School will be solely representing Scotland next year at the World Championships in Malaysia, with team XLR8 - the current Scottish National Champions - and team Hybrid, the World Collaboration Champions fighting for the world title yet again."

Fife Women's Technology Centre

A team of Young Engineers from the Fife Women's Technology Centre YEC participated in the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Techno Games Event, starring Ian Watts of Robot Wars Fame - at Adam Smith College, Kirkcaldy, and were presented with their award for winning the "Assualt Course Challenge" at the event.

The event was run by the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT), in conjunction with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and Young Engineers Clubs Scotland on the 6th March. The teams attending (40 Fife school teams) were challenged to build a robot.   Once built, the radio-controlled robots  competed in three areas - Sumo Ring, Assault Course and Football Pitch (all BBC Techno Games events).  Three prizes are awarded in each of the events.

This event has become an annual tradition at the College and gives the pupils the opportunity to learn while having lots of fun.  This is enhanced by the presence of Ian Watts, the College’s own Roboteer in Residence, who has celebrated international acclaim as a star of Robot Wars and a globetrotting Robot Ambassador.

Lochgelly High School

Members of Lochgelly High School's young engineers club are representing Scotland at the World Championships of the Formula One Technology Challenge in Melbourne.  Pupils from across the world have been competing to design, build and race scale-model Formula One cars. Lochgelly High School won the Scottish round of the challenge.  Members of the winning team are awarded scholarships by the FIA to study automotive and design engineering at the university of their choice.

Insch Primary School

Insch Primary School Young Engineers Club has teamed up with Petroleum Services Network (PSN).  PSN staff will help organise after school engineering projects and challenges for the Primary 7 children designed to educate and inspire pupils to consider pursuing engineering professions in adulthood. The core of the programme will be renewable energy.

Mearns Primary School

Primary 5 pupils from Mearns Primary School took part in the BAE sytemes SEEC competition.  All pupils had to build a model from 'junk' which could be used in the schools eco garden to reduce, reuse, recycle.  The school was awarded first prize for one child's model and design.  He designed the "Water Worm" which was a long plastic tube attached to a plastic box.  The tube had a funnel on it.  This was to collect rainwater which could be cleaned uo for drinking water.

Chairman of UK Young Engineers on Scottish Visit

The UK Chairman of Young Engineers (YE), Ken Sanders and fellow YE Board Member, Michael Franklin, travelled from London on Tuesday 14 November to further develop the links with the Young Engineers Club Scotland (YECS) network. On a day long visit to the North East of Scotland, Ken and Michael spent time with the YECS Co-ordinator, Sandy Moggach and the YECS Sponsor Link, Ian Armstrong, discussing how the Scottish and Rest of UK networks could enhance collaboration to the benefit of the young people involved in Clubs and to industry in general.

As well as discussions, visits were made to two Scottish Young Engineers Clubs at Scotstown Primary in Aberdeen and Mackie Academy in Stonehaven. The picture above shows the YE Club members at Mackie Academy flanked by Sandy and Ken (on the left) and Michael on the right.
