Links with Industry

Young Engineers Clubs in Primary and Secondary schools have found that they are most likely to get industrial help through local companies and parents. Companies often like to partner with a local school to enhance their community links. Remember that people who come into school to work with students will require to be Disclosure Scotland checked.

The various ways the company may be able to assist you are:

>
offer advice

>
provide help with construction (welding, electronics etc)

>
provide materials

>
sponsor some activity

>
offer a visit to the company

>
provide a visiting engineer

When approaching a company for support be enthusiatic about your club and inform them about the benefits of linking up with your club:

>

enhance their community image

>

attract better young staff

>
attract young people into science, engineering and technology.

>

show that science, engineering and technology is enterprising, creative, exciting and challenging

>

show that science, engineering and technology requires many skills and talents.

Support from STEM Ambassadors

STEM Ambassadors are people who work with schools on a voluntary basis, providing support and encouragement as well as role models for young people and children in science, technology, engineering and maths areas. The aim of the programme is to encourage more young people to understand the opportunities that a science, engineering or technology-based career can offer them.

STEM Ambassadors are people with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) backgrounds and skills, who are willing and able to inspire and encourage children and young people in these subjects and related careers.

There are many ways that STEM Ambassadors can assist, such as:-

  • Supporting practical work in the classroom
  • Supporting out-of-school activities such as clubs
  • Awards and competitions
  • Addressing school groups about relevant topics or their careers
  • Supporting local events (judging rounds of the Young Engineer for Britain K'Nex Challenge or assisting at careers events)

If you are interested in having a STEM Ambassador to support your school science/engineering club or to help with specific project then e-mail or complete the On-Line STEM Ambassadors Request Form to the appropriate STEM Ambassadors Coordinator for your region.
