Getting Started

Young Engineers Clubs run in a variety of formats.  In some clubs all the students work on a single project, in others, several projects of varying complexity are on the go.  All activities in the Clubs are geared to complement the curriculum and the initiative is supported by Determined to Succeed (DtS) with the emphasis on promoting the Curriculum for Excellence initiative.  You need to tailor the format of your club to suit your students and the resources you have available.

1. First you need to identify a group of students who would enjoy a challenge They could all be from the same age group or from a range of age-groups – though experience has shown that one age group is easier to manage at the start.  Many of our long established clubs have a wide age range, which gives the club the added benefits of older students mentoring the younger ones. So although more of a handful to start with, it is worth aspiring to a membership with a wide age-range.
   
2. We suggest you limit yourself to a maximum of 10 or so students to start with, as in the early stages, they will need a lot of help and attention.
   
3. Choose a suitable time to hold your club (one/two hours once a week – or during lunch times).
   
4. Inform your Senior management of what you want to do.
   
5. Complete the online “Registration Form” and send to Jane Martin, Project Manager, Young Engineers Clubs Scotland. The start-up funding of £100 for your club will then be processed.
   
6. Contact Jane Martin on jane.martin@scdi.org.uk who will advise and assist you in getting your club started.

Curriculum for Excellence

It is important to let your club settle down for 5 or 6 weeks before you start thinking about links with industry, approaching companies for sponsorship, or more complex projects. You will then have something to show potential sponsors or potential link companies.
