Banff Academy

Since its creation three years ago ‘Banff Academy Young Engineers’ have gone from strength to strength winning a total of 12 accolades to date.

The team involves pupils from S1 through to S6 who compete in several events. So far this year pupils have made a new battery powered car, known as a Greenpower car, and in June this year pupils won 2nd prize when they raced 2 Greenpower Cars at the Scottish Greenpower regional heats at Alfold.

The Club’s prototype Greenpower car qualified for the ‘Greenpower UK final: 2008’ and was piped onto the track to race in the UK finals at the famous Goodwood Race Circuit in West Sussex in October.

This year the team have also made a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), which competed in the European round of the ‘ROV Mate’ competition at Robert Gordon University in April, have built 6 robotic ‘Rampaging Chariots’ which competed in the ‘Scottish Robotics games’ at Selex in Edinburgh this June for the third consecutive year and have also completed several soldering projects.

On the 12th of June this year three S6 pupils, Ross Borland, Joseph McKinnon and Colin Wood, together with an S4 pupil, Ewen Gregor acted as representatives for the Banff Team and made what has become an annual pilgrimage for Banff Academy to the ‘Young Engineers for Scotland’ Celebration of Engineering event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow and Glasgow Science Centre. Here they competed against 60 other teams for the prestigious title of “Best Young Engineer Club in Scotland”, where prizes are awarded on the basis of the quality of projects, the technical knowledge of the pupils and teamwork.

The team set up a stand displaying information about all of their current projects, and displayed their ROV and a Rampaging Chariot. Unfortunately, because they do not have a trailer, the group was unable to display their new Greenpower car, but they discussed this project with the Industry Leaders who acted as judges for the competition, visiting the displays of every team and questioning all team members about their current projects.

Banff Academy Young Engineers don’t yet have links with industry or sponsorship, however even without these elements the industry leaders were clearly impressed with the team’s projects and with the technical knowledge of Banff Academy’s pupils. So much so that in Glasgow this June Banff Academy Young Engineers were declared overall winners of the event, and were awarded the prestigious title of “Best Young Engineers Club in Scotland”. The team returned to Banff holding the coveted overall winners trophy and a cash prize of £750 for their school.

The success of the Banff Academy team has not escaped the notice of the Scottish Parliament. Alison McInnes MSP has tabled a motion that “congratulates the Banff Academy Young Engineers Club on being named club of the year” and recognises the role of Young Engineers Clubs in “helping Scotland produce the next generation of outstanding scientists and engineers”.

A Night to Remember

On 21st November the four winning pupils, together with a fifth representative of the team, Christopher George from S4 were ‘Guests of Honour’ at a gala dinner at the Scottish Council for Development in Industry in Glasgow to celebrate their success. The team were delighted that “Soy Kilts Hire” of Portsoy offered to provide kilts for the gala dinner and also for future events. Read about it here: "A Night to Remember"

The team are already looking to the future. Their success has brought new challenges - in March the pupils will travel to Greenwich Village to compete in the UK finals against winning clubs from around the UK.

This school year we have started a remote control car project for 2nd and 3rd year with the intention competing in F1 in Schools next June. Our club is also heavily involved in the Greenpower race series; we have two cars with the intention to create another faster car this year to compete in the Scottish race and also at Croft race circuit. We are also in the process of making a new ROV for the international ROV mate competition and looking to make our own underwater camera for the ROV. Also new for this school year we are hoping to take part in the Rapid Electronics Toyota challenge with a team of fourth years. Once again this year we will be participating in the Schlumberger event for the 2nd year.
