The team involves pupils from S1 through to S6 who compete in several events. So far this year pupils have made a new battery powered car, known as a Greenpower car, and in June this year pupils won 2nd prize when they raced 2 Greenpower Cars at the Scottish Greenpower regional heats at Alfold.
The Club’s prototype Greenpower car qualified for the ‘Greenpower UK final: 2008’ and was piped onto the track to race in the UK finals at the famous Goodwood Race Circuit in West Sussex in October.
This year the team have also made a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), which competed in the European round of the ‘ROV Mate’ competition at Robert Gordon University in April, have built 6 robotic ‘Rampaging Chariots’ which competed in the ‘Scottish Robotics games’ at Selex in Edinburgh this June for the third consecutive year and have also completed several soldering projects.
On the 12th of June this year three S6 pupils, Ross Borland, Joseph McKinnon and Colin Wood, together with an S4 pupil, Ewen Gregor acted as representatives for the Banff Team and made what has become an annual pilgrimage for Banff Academy to the ‘Young Engineers for Scotland’ Celebration of Engineering event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow and Glasgow Science Centre. Here they competed against 60 other teams for the prestigious title of “Best Young Engineer Club in Scotland”, where prizes are awarded on the basis of the quality of projects, the technical knowledge of the pupils and teamwork.
The team set up a stand displaying information about all of their current projects, and displayed their ROV and a Rampaging Chariot. Unfortunately, because they do not have a trailer, the group was unable to display their new Greenpower car, but they discussed this project with the Industry Leaders who acted as judges for the competition, visiting the displays of every team and questioning all team members about their current projects. |
