| The Young Engineers & Science Clubs Scotland project is organised by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, and has been running since 1987. |
| |
The Clubs are aimed at Primary and Secondary school pupils who are interested in science, engineering and technology, and who want to find out more about what engineers and scientists do. The network has over 500 science, engineering and technology clubs throughout Scotland, with a membership of more than 10,000 girls and boys participating in the Clubs. Girls are positively encouraged to become members. The Clubs adopt a very hands-on approach to projects in science; electrical, electronic, mechanical, robotics and civil engineering; and a wide range of technology applications. |
| |
The Young Engineers & Science Clubs offer an opportunity for pupils to experience the rewards and challenges of science, engineering and technology activities. Most Secondary clubs are run as lunchtime or after-school activities but an increasingly popular option for Primaries is to run a club with a whole class. |
Pupils get the opportunity to test their problem-solving skills in a team working environment, and to develop their creative and innovative skills working alongside real engineers. |
The emphasis is on team working, so that everyone can contribute to the project. Clubs are led by school staff and links with STEM Ambassadors are encouraged. |
Towards the end of the Club session, Clubs are invited to compete for the coveted title of “Club of the Year” at the annual Celebration of Engineering and Science event held in Glasgow in June each year. |
