The Clubs

The Young Engineers Clubs Scotland project is organised by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, and has been running since 1987.  The Clubs are aimed at Primary and Secondary school pupils who are interested in science, engineering and technology, and who want to find out more about what engineers do.  The network has over 270 science, engineering and technology clubs throughout Scotland, with a membership of more than 4,000 girls and boys participating in the Clubs. Girls are positively encouraged to become members.  The Clubs adopt a very hands-on approach to projects in science; electrical, electronic, mechanical, robotics and civil engineering; and a wide range of technology applications.

When and Where

The majority of Clubs start-up after the October break, running either at lunchtimes or as an after school activity.  The timing of the Club meetings is arranged by the school.  Sometimes clubs are hosted by Colleges.

What is the Format of the Clubs

The Young Engineers Clubs offer an opportunity for pupils to experience the rewards and challenges of science, engineering and technology activities.  There is an opportunity for pupils to test their problem-solving skills in a team working environment, and to develop their creative and innovative skills working alongside real engineers.  The emphasis is on team working, so that everyone can contribute to the project.  All projects are supervised by school or college staff.  Towards the end of the Club session, Clubs are invited to compete for the coveted title of “Young Engineers Club of the Year” at the annual Showcase and Technology Challenge event.

Industrial Visits

To add variety to the Club programme, industrial visits are encouraged during the Club session. Visits can be arranged by the Young Engineers Clubs Project Manager.

Funding

Assistance to new Clubs is available through the Young Engineers Clubs Project Manager.
